The Colors of Armenia
December 6 – December 16, 2007

The exposition included 45 works of 39 artists, comprising a period of more than 50 years and illustrating the wealth of tendencies, the variety in the development of pictorial arts in Armenia, the specific range of colours, temper, imagery and traditions. The influence of the School of Martiros Saryan is apparent in some of the works, while the spirit of Europe and the whiffs of impressionism, expressionism, even of cubusm and surrealism, could be felt in others.

Artists, who enjoy great international recognition, were presented at this exhibition. The works of H. Sardaryan, A. Bekaryan, A. Kalentz, as well as the compositions and portraits of V. Galstyan and S. Ksatalmyan transform in their own way the traditions of the Saryan school. The experiments, the modernist conception of the world as well as the free contemporary spirit are characteristic for H. Shahumyan, S. Savanyan, A. Karapetyan, K. Aksamyan, who achieve interesting generalizations in the harmony of real shapes. The modernist works of G. Aksassayn, G. Grigoryan and H. Sadjayan win with their deep national hues and delicacy of line.

This small group of Armenian artists gives an idea about the high level of fine arts in Armenia, about the unique interpretation of the modern world and enriches our ideas about the centuries-old traditions of a proud and independent people.
